Belly Casting in Sydney: Preserve Your Beautiful Baby Bump with a Unique Pregnancy Keepsake

There is something truly magical about pregnancy. The anticipation, the little kicks, the growing bump, and the incredible feeling of knowing that a tiny new life is growing inside you. It is a chapter filled with excitement, love, dreams and changes – and one that, despite feeling like it lasts forever at times, passes all too quickly.

One day, you're admiring your beautiful baby bump in the mirror, and before you know it, you're holding your little miracle in your arms.

Photographs are a wonderful way to preserve these memories, but what if you could keep something a little more tangible? Something you could actually touch, display in your home, and treasure for decades?

At Janette Osvay Photography in Pymble, Sydney's North Shore, we offer something a little different alongside our maternity photography: pregnancy belly casting.

A belly cast is a three-dimensional impression of your pregnant body, transformed into a unique keepsake that celebrates the beauty of motherhood. It is personal, meaningful, and can even become a beautiful piece of artwork in its own right.

Let's take a closer look at this special experience!

1. What Is Pregnancy Belly Casting?

Pregnancy belly casting is a creative way of preserving the shape of your baby bump during pregnancy.

Using plaster-impregnated gauze strips, we carefully create a mould of your pregnant belly, capturing its beautiful curves and shape at this particular moment in your motherhood journey.

Once removed, dried and finished, the cast becomes a three-dimensional sculpture of your pregnancy.

Unlike a photograph, which captures how you looked, a belly cast preserves the actual shape of your bump. It is a little piece of your pregnancy that you can keep forever.

And the best part? No two belly casts are ever quite the same. Each one reflects a different mum, a different pregnancy and a different little life waiting to make its entrance into the world.

2. Why Create a Belly Cast? A Keepsake You Will Treasure Forever

Pregnancy is such a unique experience. Even if you have several children, every pregnancy is different, and every baby brings a new story.

Your belly cast is a way of celebrating that particular journey.

Imagine looking at it years from now, remembering how your baby used to stretch, kick and move inside your tummy. Remembering the excitement of choosing names, preparing the nursery and wondering what your little one would look like.

It can become a beautiful conversation piece in your home, a treasured family heirloom or simply something special that makes you smile whenever you walk past it.

And while your baby will undoubtedly become the most beautiful part of your world, your belly cast will always remind you of the incredible journey that brought you together.

3. What Does a Belly Casting Session Involve?

You might imagine that having a belly cast made is a complicated or uncomfortable process, but it is actually quite straightforward.

Our belly casting sessions are designed to be relaxed and enjoyable. You simply sit back comfortably while we take care of the creative work.

We use plaster gauze strips, carefully applying them to create the desired shape. The actual casting process usually takes approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the size and style of the cast.

Once the plaster has been applied, it needs some time to dry sufficiently before we can gently remove it.

The process can get a little messy, but that's all part of the fun! We have a bathroom with a shower conveniently located right next to the studio, so you can wash away any remaining plaster, freshen up and get dressed before heading home.

No rushing, no complicated preparation – just a little creative adventure to celebrate your pregnancy.

4. Belly Only or a Full Belly Cast? You Choose!

Every mum has her own ideas about how she would like her belly cast to look.

Some prefer a simple cast of their baby bump, while others love the idea of capturing a larger part of their pregnancy silhouette.

We offer several possibilities:

Belly-only cast

A beautiful impression of your baby bump, capturing its shape and curves. This is our simplest and most affordable option, and a lovely way to preserve your pregnancy.

Belly and breasts cast

For those who would like something more comprehensive, we can extend the casting to include the breasts as well.

A full torso cast

Depending on your preferences and the design discussed beforehand, we can create a more extensive cast, extending from below your belly up towards your neck.

One of our recent projects was exactly this: a beautiful full belly cast, created according to our client's wishes. It required a little more time and care than a traditional baby bump cast, but the result promises to be absolutely stunning!

The important thing is that your cast is created according to your preferences, comfort and imagination.

5. From Simple Plaster to a Beautiful Work of Art

A freshly made belly cast is only the beginning!

Once the plaster has completely dried, it can be carefully refined, smoothed and transformed into something truly special.

Some mums prefer the natural, simple appearance of plaster, while others would love their cast to become a decorative artwork.

Depending on your wishes, we can discuss different finishing possibilities, including:

  • Leaving the cast in its natural plaster finish.

  • Smoothing the surface for a more refined appearance.

  • Painting it in a colour of your choice.

  • Creating a more artistic, decorative finish.

  • Adding a custom stand so your artwork can stand independently.

We love discussing ideas with our clients and sharing our recommendations. You might already have a particular look in mind, or perhaps you would like us to suggest something beautiful.

Either way, we can explore the possibilities together.

Our goal is to create something that feels personal to you – not just another maternity keepsake, but a piece of art that tells your story.

6. A Beautiful Surprise: Your Belly Cast Can Become a Newborn Photography Prop!

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful reasons to consider having a belly cast made.

Did you know that your pregnancy belly cast can also be used as a special prop during your baby's newborn photography session?

Think about the symbolism.

Before your baby was born, they were nestled safely inside your tummy. And now, in a beautiful photograph, they can be photographed curled up inside the very shape that once held them.

It creates an incredibly meaningful connection between your maternity and newborn portraits.

Imagine having two photographs displayed side by side: one celebrating your beautiful pregnancy, and another showing your precious newborn nestled inside the cast of your baby bump.

One captures the anticipation of motherhood. The other celebrates the arrival of your little miracle.

Together, they tell a story that words could never quite describe.

Of course, not every belly cast is suitable for newborn posing. The cast's shape, finish, stability and construction need to be assessed carefully before any photographic use. Your baby's comfort and safety always come first.

7. Can I Book Belly Casting Without a Maternity Photoshoot?

Absolutely!

Although belly casting works beautifully alongside our maternity portrait sessions, you do not need to book a photoshoot to enjoy this experience.

You are welcome to book a belly casting session on its own.

Perhaps you have already had your maternity photographs taken elsewhere, or maybe you simply love the idea of preserving your baby bump in a different way.

Whatever your reason, we would be delighted to create something special for you.

And if you are considering maternity portraits as well, combining the two experiences is a wonderful way to celebrate your pregnancy in more than one form.

You can have beautiful photographs capturing your appearance and personality, together with a three-dimensional keepsake of your baby bump.

Our belly casting services start at $150 for a simple belly-only cast.

Additional options, such as including the breasts and chest, creating a more extensive cast, smoothing, painting and custom finishing, are available at different prices.

10. When Is the Best Time to Have a Belly Cast Made?

Generally, belly casting is best arranged during the later stages of pregnancy, when your baby bump has developed its beautiful, recognisable shape.

The ideal timing depends on your pregnancy, your comfort and the look you would like to achieve.

We recommend contacting us in advance so we can discuss your plans and arrange a suitable appointment.

If you are also considering maternity portraits, we can discuss scheduling both experiences together.

There is no need to leave everything until the very last moment. Babies have their own plans, after all!

11. A Little Piece of Motherhood to Keep Forever

One of the most beautiful things about photography is its ability to take us back in time.

A photograph can remind us of a moment we might otherwise forget. A tiny detail, a particular expression, a familiar touch.

But sometimes, it is lovely to have something beyond a photograph.

Something that reminds us of the shape of our baby bump, the feeling of carrying our little one and the anticipation of meeting them for the very first time.

Your belly cast is a little piece of that story.

It doesn't have to be perfect or elaborate. It doesn't have to look like something from an art gallery. It simply has to mean something to you.

And perhaps, one day, when your little one is much bigger, you can show them the shape of the little home they once had inside you.

What a beautiful thing to share!
